Making a potpourri is a nice way to stay connected to nature after returning from a stroll or the garden. By choosing various plants and drying them carefully, their pretty colors and aromas remain present and thus benefit the entire household. The recipe for a potpourri could not be simpler since it is almost only a question of letting plants dry before assembling them in a pretty container. It is at the time of picking that everything is played out, and there, no established rule. A few cheerfully colored petals here, some aromatics there, a lemon zest, a little peel to make it look pretty… let your desires speak! Step 1: Prepare a crate
Before starting the harvest, bring a crate or a basket to place your picking there. A flat bottom is ideal to avoid damaging the flowers. Dress a simple crate with a sheet of newspaper, and you're ready for the adventure. If you plan to cut small branches, or even just to pick roses without scratching your teeth, also use a pruner.
Step 2: Pick flowers
Choose fragrant flowers so that your potpourri is rich in natural aromas. Do not limit yourself to this single factor, and also think about shapes and colors when making your selection. Here, we have chosen calendulas for their magnificent yellow and orange petals, borage for the blue of its small flowers, carnation heads and a few rosebuds.
Step 3: Pick aromatics
Very fragrant, aromatics naturally invite themselves into a medley. Here we choose a few sprigs of thyme, lemongrass leaves and a few sprigs of lavender.
Step 4: Pick leaves
Because a potpourri is also there for the pleasure of the eyes, do not hesitate to decorate it with foliage. Here, we take a few ivy leaves that will keep their shine and solidity when dry.
Step 5 (optional): Have the "flavors" reflex
Your fruit dish or garden may contain other interesting ingredients such as fruits (apples, pears) or citrus fruits. Again, it's all about shapes, colors and smells. In our case, a slightly dry lemon will make us happy once cut into thin slices.
Step 6: Think about the decorative elements
It is your desires and nature's resources that will dictate your choices. Moss, bark, pine cones… anything is possible! Here, we fall for a few bunches of wild hazelnuts.
Step 7: Dry your harvest
All the ingredients for your potpourri are now gathered. For drying, two options are available to you: - The school of patience: you will place the plants away from light in a dry and ventilated place for a few weeks, until they become crisp. - The school of speed: your oven is your friend, it will save you precious time. Place the vegetables on the baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Put the oven on 100 ° C for about an hour of "cooking". Keep an eye on the operations and only remove the plate when your crop is dry. The operation is a little longer for citrus fruits than for petals, if necessary remove the flowers and extend the drying for citrus fruits.
Step 8: Train your potpourri
Gather all the ingredients and mix them. At this stage, to preserve the aromas, you can add iris powder which will serve as a fixative (optional). All you have to do is place the ingredients in a nice container.
Step 9 (optional): Add a little flavor!
If your potpourri is not naturally fragrant enough, or if it has lost some of its aromas, you can revive it with essential oils. A few drops are enough, knowing that there too, it is your desires that lead the dance: orange, tangerine, lemon, lavender, pink ... everything is possible! Once these few drops have been added, stir the contents of your potpourri so that the aromas are distributed throughout the composition.
